Michelle Volunteer House Tour 2017 New Paltz

The Wallkill Valley Land Trust (WVLT) invites you to volunteer for its 8th annual historic house tour, Houses on the Land: Plattekill’s Rural Treasures: Houses, Hamlets, Crossings and Byways. This year’s tour explores the fascinating history, families, agriculture, and cultural heritage of the town of Plattekill winding through richly varied countryside via its many crossings and hamlets - New Hurley, Modena, Ardonia, Clintondale and Plattekill, a rarely explored and little-known land-locked region between Gardiner, Shawangunk, Marlboro and Lloyd. The day begins with registration and a tour of the beautiful New Hurley Reformed Church. Featured houses are among the town’s most interesting and unusual vernacular treasures from the 19th to the 20th centuries, highlighting the Greek Revival aesthetic and its diverse vernacular expressions. As a volunteer, you will join a small team of docents for one of two shifts at one of the houses on the tour. Docents help to monitor and safeguard the homes, direct traffic flow, enforce rules, and share their knowledge of their assigned home’s history and architectural features, thereby enhancing the tour’s reputation as an interesting, enjoyable and smoothly run event. As a thank you for your service, volunteers receive admission to the tour and the reception following.

Schedule:

  • Early-May: An orientation package will be emailed (or mailed if you don’t have email) to you about three weeks prior to the tour. It will include the history of the township, a description of your assigned house, a map of the tour route with specific directions to the house, and a list of fellow docents.
  • Saturday, June 2: All docents are to arrive at their assigned house by 9:45am where they will receive their registration materials, any final instructions, and an orientation tour of the house.

First Shift:                    9:45 – 1:45 (9:45-10:45 All Docents’ Registration & Orientation)

Second Shift:               1:45 - 4:30 (arrive 9:45 for orientation; leave at 10:45; return at 1:30)

Reception:                   4:30 – 6:00 at a private home (optional)
