Since the completion of renovations to the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail in 2023, we are delighted to see the safe and responsible public use of this wonderful community resource.
However, we are disheartened that over the Labor Day weekend there was an act of significant vandalism on the bridge over the Plattekill Creek south of the Village of New Paltz. The damage to the railing on the bridge not only creates an extremely unsafe condition, but it is also a blatant disregard for public property.
When the bridge was replaced last year, the rail treatment was designed and constructed in compliance with all applicable building codes. Its destruction is a violation to the community and does not align with our collective values.
The Wallkill Valley Rail Trail is a stunning success and a model for public-private partnerships to improve the quality of life of a community through access to nature and open space for all.
We urge all who love and use the Rail Trail responsibly to enjoy it in a safe and respectful manner.
